she flew onto the ledge of my window and perched. breathing faster and more heavily than i, because her lungs took up half of her body. chatting and chirping - at regular intervals - as if she knew exactly what she meant by what she said, who she was, and what she was waiting for.
i thought briefly about the sparrow and all that that means - being clothed as a matter of creation, being fed by the faithfulness of God. essentially, enjoying its bird life without ever "earning" a lick of it.
the interesting thing is what happened after. when i shut off my automated-response thoughts and just watched to see what would happen ... privy to some reality tv show of the bird variety, right in the midst of my prayer.
along came her friend. with a worm in his mouth. and they seemed to be working out some logistics. in a matter of moments, he flew away. and she followed him off to some nesting place.
